Every Dot Matters

In 1886, French painter Georges Seurat unveiled A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, a massive canvas nearly seven feet tall and ten feet wide. What stunned the Parisian art world was his technique. Seurat didn't blend his colors on a palette. Instead, he placed thousands upon thousands of tiny, individual dots of pure color side by side — a technique known as pointillism.

Stand close to the painting, and all you see is chaos: isolated specks of blue, orange, green, and yellow that seem to have no relationship to one another. But step back, and something remarkable happens. The dots merge. Figures appear. Light shimmers on water. A whole community emerges in a sunlit park — mothers, children, soldiers, couples — all held together in one luminous scene.

This is a portrait of the church. Up close, we are a scattered collection of individuals — different colors, different temperaments, different stories. A retired teacher here, a struggling teenager there, a widow in the third row. Alone, none of us looks like much. But when God steps back and sees the whole canvas, He sees something breathtaking: a community where every single dot matters, where your unique hue fills a space no one else can fill.

Paul said it plainly: "Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it" (1 Corinthians 12:27). No dot is wasted. No color is accidental. And the painting isn't finished without you.
