Every Work Brought Into Divine Judgment
Ecclesiastes 11:14 declares a truth that arrested Victorian consciences and arrests ours still: "For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good or whether it be evil."
Joseph S. Exell, in The Biblical Illustrator (1887), grounded this doctrine in Scripture itself—Jude 14, Job 19:26, Psalm 9:7–8, Daniel 7:9–10, Matthew 25:31–46, and Revelation 20:11–13 all testify to a Day of Judgment. But Exell pressed deeper: conscience itself, influenced by the Holy Spirit, points toward accountability. The soul's immortality demands it. Justice demands it.
Who judges? Not an arbitrary power, but Jesus Christ alone—adequate because He is both Son of God and Son of Man. As Elohim's Son, He understands eternal law and divine justice. As the Son of Man, He comprehends human weakness, the movements of our hearts, the limits of our ability. He judges with mercy and grace alongside righteousness.
This doctrine excludes no one. An inferior animal—a horse or dog—cannot be held accountable because it lacks noesis (rational understanding) and cannot apprehend distinctions between right and wrong. But humanity possesses intellect, moral agency, and will. We are accountable. Every secret thing—every hidden motive, every concealed deed—shall be brought into light before the throne of Adonai.
