Faith Without a Map

In J.R.R. Tolkien's The Fellowship of the Ring, there comes a moment at the Council of Elrond when the great and powerful have spent hours debating what to do with the One Ring. Warriors, wizards, and elven lords argue strategy and logistics. Then a small hobbit, barely noticed among these mighty figures, speaks up with a trembling voice: "I will take the Ring, though I do not know the way."

Frodo doesn't volunteer because he has a plan. He has no map for the journey ahead, no military training, no special strength. He simply knows the task must be done, and something within him says, "I will go."

That is what faith looks like. It is not waiting until every question is answered and every danger accounted for. It is standing up when the Spirit stirs your heart and saying, "I don't know the way, but I will go."

Abraham left Ur not knowing where he was going. Moses stood before Pharaoh with nothing but a staff and a word from the Almighty. The disciples dropped their nets and followed a rabbi they had only just met.

Faith is not the absence of uncertainty. It is the willingness to move forward when the only thing you know for certain is that God has asked you to take the next step. You don't need the whole map. You just need the courage to say, "I will go."
