Faithful from the First Kick
On November 19, 1969, Edson Arantes do Nascimento — known to the world as Pelé — stepped to the penalty spot at Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro. With 65,000 fans holding their breath, the twenty-nine-year-old striker drove the ball past Vasco da Gama goalkeeper Andrada to score his 1,000th professional goal. The stadium erupted. Fans swarmed the field, and the match was halted as Pelé held the ball aloft.
But that moment did not begin at Maracanã. It began in the streets of Bauru, São Paulo, where a boy too poor to own a soccer ball kicked a sock stuffed with newspaper through dirt alleys. It began when his father, Dondinho — himself a former player whose career was cut short by injury — taught young Edson to strike with both feet. It began when former national team player Waldemar de Brito brought the fifteen-year-old to Santos FC in 1956, telling the coaches, "This boy will be the greatest player in the world."
One thousand goals did not happen in a single night. They were built one practice, one match, one faithful effort at a time.
In Matthew 25:21, the master says, "Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things." God does not ask for overnight greatness. He asks for faithfulness with whatever is in your hands today — even if it is nothing more than a sock stuffed with newspaper. Dedicate the small, unseen moments to Him, and watch what He builds from your faithfulness.
