Faithful Wounds Against Deceitful Kisses
Proverbs 26:4 contrasts two forms of encounter: "Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful." The ancient cynic Diogenes carried a lighted lantern through Athens at midday, searching for "a man"—a true friend. His difficulty mirrors our own.
True friendship often wears rough garments. Enmity steals the costume of love. Men prefer flattery to the rebuke of the faithful friend, yet the truth-speaker inflicts necessary pain.
God's friendship demonstrates this principle. Out of the depths of His loving heart, Elohim summons the prodigal sinner to return. Repentance follows—a toilsome path, rugged and weary, yet faithful to restore.
Satan's enmity operates through deceitful offers. An enemy deals in pretenses of love and deceives with a kiss. When Satan tempted Christ in the wilderness, he came wielding bribes disguised as blessing. Sin perpetually wears the garb of friendship without its substance, and men remain enslaved to appearances.
The truly wise man demonstrates his wisdom by detecting the embraces of an enemy, by piercing the false promise and the lying lips. Discernment becomes the mark of spiritual maturity—the ability to distinguish Yahweh's faithful wounds from the Devil's counterfeit caress.
