When Jesus fasted for forty days, He demonstrated that 'man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God' (Matthew 4:4). The Church's ancient wisdom recognizes three pillars of Lent: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. These work together to reorient our lives. Fasting from food teaches us that we can survive—even thrive—with less than we think we need. But we can also fast from other things that have gained too much power over us: social media, entertainment, shopping, gossip, or complaining. The goal isn't to prove our willpower but to create space for God. When we fast from constant noise, we can hear God's voice. When we fast from endless consumption, we remember our dependence on God. When we fast from criticism, we learn to see others with compassion. Joel 2:12 calls us to 'return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.'
