Fifteen Billion Miles from Lost

In late 2023, NASA's Voyager 1 — the farthest human-made object from Earth, sailing through interstellar space fifteen billion miles away — went silent. After forty-six years of faithful transmission, the spacecraft began sending back gibberish. Months of garbled, meaningless data streamed across the Deep Space Network. Many assumed Voyager 1 was finished.

But engineers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory refused to give up. They discovered that a single corrupted memory chip in the flight data subsystem was scrambling everything. They couldn't replace the chip — nothing can physically reach that far. So they found another way. Carefully, painstakingly, they rerouted the spacecraft's code around the damaged section, relocating it to healthy memory. In the spring of 2024, Voyager 1's voice came through clear again.

Redemption works like that. We don't have to be discarded because something inside us is broken. God doesn't look at the corruption of sin and declare us beyond repair. He reaches across an impossible distance — the distance between Heaven and a manger, between holiness and our fractured humanity — and reroutes everything through the cross. He works around what is damaged and restores us to our original purpose.

As the apostle Paul wrote, "If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come" (2 Corinthians 5:17). The Almighty specializes in restoring signals the world has given up on.
