Finding God in Climate Change & Stewardship
In this season of climate uncertainty, we face a profound moral challenge, one that calls for our deepest reflection and action. Much like the parable of the talents in Matthew 25, we have been given the precious gift of our planet, and it is our sacred duty to steward it well.
Let me tell you about David, a passionate youth leader in our church. Last year, he dreamed of a "Green Sunday" that would awaken his congregation to the call of environmental stewardship. With fervor, he rallied the community, transforming their worship into a celebration of creation. They installed solar panels atop the church, their gleaming surfaces reflecting the sunlight like a promise of renewal.
But they didn't stop there. David inspired the young and old to cultivate a community garden, where the congregation could grow fresh produce to share with local families. It became a sanctuary of fellowship, laughter, and learning, where children got their hands dirty while learning about the interconnectedness of all life. On Sundays, as they gathered, they challenged each other to carpool, reducing their carbon footprint while nurturing relationships that deepened their faith.
What blossomed from this initiative was not merely an environmental project but a powerful witness to their community of what it means to take our faith into action. As they worked together, they found joy in caring for God’s creation, echoing the words of Psalm 23:1-6, where we are reminded that the Lord is our shepherd, guiding us gently as we navigate this world. In tending to the earth, they discovered purpose, belonging, and a renewed commitment to live in harmony with the creation that sustains us all.
