Finding the Knowledge of God Through Revelation
The knowledge of God cannot be discovered through human effort alone. As Proverbs 2:5 commands us to "find the knowledge of God," we must recognize that Elohim reveals Himself through Scripture, not through natural observation or philosophical reasoning.
Sir Humphrey Davy observed that religion's transformative power intensifies during suffering and age. When submission mingles with faith and humble trust in the Divine will, duties become sources of consolation. This knowledge creates powers thought extinct and renovates the mind with immortal hope. Like an evening star lighting life's horizon, it promises to become a morning star, casting radiance through death's shadow.
Yet natural philosophy cannot provide what revelation alone offers. Nature tells us nothing of the world to come, nothing beyond what our senses can grasp. Observation and inductive reasoning cannot answer the crucial questions: What awaits after death? What motives should govern conduct? Nature suggests only extinction—that we shall "probably be just like the dog, or horse, or any other animal."
Therefore, we must seek the knowledge of God through Scripture, where Yahweh unveils Himself directly. No system of ethics founded on utilitarian motives suffices. The knowledge of God requires His self-revelation—His apokalypsis (uncovering)—made manifest through His Word. This is not information we can deduce; it is truth we must receive.
