Five Hundred Yards of Darkness
In The Shawshank Redemption, there is a moment that makes audiences hold their breath. Andy Dufresne has spent nineteen years inside those gray walls — wrongfully convicted, beaten down, stripped of everything that once defined him. But for two decades, night after night, he has been chipping away at concrete with a tiny rock hammer no bigger than his palm. And when the night finally comes, his only path to freedom runs through five hundred yards of raw sewage pipe. He crawls on his belly through absolute filth and darkness, gagging, half-drowning, with no guarantee the pipe even leads somewhere survivable. Then he emerges on the other side, staggers into a creek bed, tears his shirt open, and lifts his face to the rain as a free man.
Some of you are in the pipe right now. You cannot see light in either direction. The grief, the diagnosis, the marriage hanging by a thread — it smells like death and feels like it will never end. But you have been moving forward, inch by inch, even when nobody could see it.
The writer of Hebrews understood this: "Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus" (Hebrews 12:1–2). The Almighty never promised the path would be clean or comfortable. He promised it would lead somewhere.
Keep crawling. The rain is closer than you think.
