Five Loaves in a Church Kitchen
In 2019, Maria Hernandez stood in the kitchen of Grace Community Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, staring at two casserole dishes and a slow cooker of soup. The church had announced a community meal for families displaced by recent flooding, and she had expected maybe thirty people. By six o'clock, over two hundred lined the sidewalk outside.
"We don't have enough," she told Pastor David, her voice tight with panic. "We should tell people to come back tomorrow."
Pastor David shook his head. "Start serving."
So Maria did. She portioned smaller. Volunteers stretched the soup with broth and canned vegetables donated from the church pantry. A family who had come to eat noticed the situation and drove home to bring back a crockpot of chili. A local pizzeria owner in line called his shop and had twelve pizzas delivered free. A retired baker went home and returned with every loaf of bread in her freezer.
