Four Essentials of Effectual Prayer Before God
When the psalmist cries, 'Hear my prayer, O God,' he raises a question that strikes at the heart of all devotion: What does it truly mean for the Almighty to hear our supplications?
Spurgeon identifies four critical matters that constitute our main concern in prayer. First, we must understand what God's hearing actually means—it is not mere auditory reception, but active acknowledgment and gracious response from the throne of grace. Second, we must learn how to discern that He has indeed heard us. This is not always manifest in immediate circumstance; sometimes His hearing is confirmed through inner peace, renewed courage, or the quiet certainty that settles upon the believing heart.
Third, when doubt clouds our assurance—when we cannot clearly perceive His answer—we must know what action to take. We return to the throne with renewed earnestness, not with accusation, but with deeper faith and patient waiting. We remind ourselves of His covenant promises and His character of faithfulness.
Fourth, when His hearing becomes unmistakable and the blessing flows, we must render what is due to Him: thanksgiving, worship, and devoted obedience. The prayer that receives answer must bear fruit in transformed conduct and grateful service.
