Four Hours and Thirty-Seven Minutes

In 2018, Apple introduced a feature called Screen Time that quietly tracks every minute you spend on your phone — which apps, how many pickups, how many notifications. Most people ignore it until the weekly report appears on a Sunday morning, right before church. Four hours and thirty-seven minutes. Daily. That is what the average American now spends staring at a screen in their palm. And when people first see their own number, the reaction is almost always the same: "That can't be right."

But it is. And something remarkable happens when people actually sit with that truth instead of dismissing it. They start making changes. They set limits. They delete apps that were devouring hours they did not know they had lost. The data does not shame them into change — it frees them to choose differently.

Jesus said, "You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free" (John 8:32). Notice He did not say the truth would make you comfortable. He said it would make you free. The Holy Spirit works like that weekly Screen Time report — quietly, persistently showing us where our hours, our affections, our attention have been going. Not to condemn, but to liberate. Because you cannot break free from a chain you refuse to see.
