From the Stockroom to the Super Bowl

In 1994, Kurt Warner was stocking shelves at a Hy-Vee grocery store in Cedar Falls, Iowa, earning $5.50 an hour. The Green Bay Packers had just cut him. No NFL team wanted him. He bagged groceries on the night shift, and by day he coached at Northern Iowa for free, waiting for a door that showed no sign of opening.

He played in the Arena Football League. He played in NFL Europe. For five years, he kept showing up to be shaped by every humbling assignment placed before him.

Then in 1999, the St. Louis Rams' starting quarterback Trent Green went down with a knee injury in the preseason. Warner stepped in — and threw for 4,353 yards that season. He won the NFL MVP award and led the Rams to a Super Bowl XXXIV championship, earning Super Bowl MVP honors along the way.

The grocery store didn't disqualify him. It prepared him.

Paul wrote to the Romans, "We also glory in our sufferings, because we suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope" (Romans 5:3-4). God does not waste a single chapter of our story. The seasons that feel like demotion — the stockroom shifts, the rejection letters, the long stretches of invisibility — are often the very furnace in which the Almighty forges something we could not have built in comfort.
