Glorying in the Lord Alone: The Cure for Human Pride
All classes of men glory in something. Even the righteous tend toward this instinct, often fixing their praise upon unworthy objects. But Elohim has not repressed this deep human tendency—He has redirected it. The cure for glorying in men, in riches, and in self is glorying in the Lord alone.
Why only in the Lord? First, the theme is too magnificent to admit another. If Elohim fills all in all, no second glory exists beside His infinite splendor. Adonai declared: "My glory will I not give to another, nor My praise to graven images." Where the ark of the Lord stood, Dagon fell. Consider Nebuchadnezzar, Belshazzar, and Herod—all learned this truth through ruin.
Second, no other object merits our boasting. All earthly things flow from Him; to glory in the rheo (stream) while ignoring the fountain-head is folly. Moreover, all temporal things fade. "To-day is, and to-morrow will pass away." Why invest your glory in the fleeting?
Third, nothing in creation compares to Elohim. He is the sun; the stars hide when He appears. When we glory in the Lord, we align with creation's song: "The heavens declare the glory of Elohim." We accord with Providence, with the angels singing "Glory to God in the highest," and with the Divine Trinity itself—Father glorifying Son, Son glorifying Father, Holy Spirit glorifying Christ. This alone satisfies the human heart.
