God's Cochlear Implant
In 2005, engineers at Cochlear Limited activated their one-hundred-thousandth implant — a tiny device threaded into the inner ear that bypasses damaged hair cells entirely. It does not repair what is broken. It creates an entirely new pathway for sound to reach the brain.
But here is what the activation videos never show you. When a cochlear implant is first switched on, the patient does not hear the world the way they remember it. Voices sound robotic, metallic, strange. Music is nearly unrecognizable. The brain must learn, over weeks and months, to interpret signals arriving through a pathway it has never used before. The healing is real — but it does not feel like going back. It feels like going forward into something unfamiliar.
This is so often how God heals. We pray for restoration — for things to return to the way they were before the diagnosis, before the betrayal, before the loss. But the Healer of our souls rarely works by reversing time. He creates new pathways. He routes grace around the damage, not through some lesser version of life, but through a fuller one we have to grow into.
The prophet Isaiah heard God say, "See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?" (Isaiah 43:19).
If your healing feels unfamiliar, take heart. You are not broken beyond repair. You are learning to hear in a frequency you have never used — and the voice reaching you is the voice of the Living God.
