God's Abundant Blessing Upon Zion's Provision
The Lord declares concerning Zion, His church: "I will abundantly bless her provision." This provision encompasses the word, the ordinances, and Christ Himself as their sum and substance. The gospel offers milk for babes and meat for strong men; the ordinances present a feast of fat things. Christ's flesh is meat indeed, and His blood drink indeed. This entire provision flows spiritual, savory, salutary, strengthening, satisfying, and nourishing when Yahweh blesses it—particularly to those who hunger and thirst after righteousness and feed upon it by faith. Their souls grow thereby, becoming fat and flourishing; grace increases within them, and they bear fruit in every good work.
The Lord promises this blessing abundantly, in a very large manner. The original Hebrew renders it "in blessing I will bless"—barakh barakh—signifying not mere promise but absolute certainty.
Further, the Lord declares: "I will satisfy her poor with bread." Zion possesses her poor—persons materially impoverished yet belonging to her communion. Our Lord assured His disciples they would always have the poor among them. Yet chiefly, this refers to the spiritually poor: the Lord's afflicted and distressed ones, those sensible of their spiritual poverty and seeking true riches. These are the poor in spirit to whom the kingdom of heaven belongs. Yahweh promises to satisfy them fully with the bread of the gospel, made of the finest wheat, with abundance in His storehouse, and with Christ Himself—the bread of life—of whom those who eat shall never die but live eternally.
