God's Choice of Zion Rests Upon His Pleasure Alone
When Yahweh chooses a dwelling place, He does not consult the worthiness of that location or its inhabitants. His selection springs entirely from His sovereign good pleasure, not from merit or deservedness. This principle transforms how we understand the church's identity.
David Dickson observed that once Yahweh has chosen His church, He rests in His love toward her. The Almighty does not remain perpetually anxious about His choice or second-guess His commitment. Rather, He settles into His affection as permanently as a weary traveler finds rest.
What sustains this divine confidence in His people? Dickson identified the reason: Yahweh perceives the sweet savor of Christ—the aroma of Christ's redemptive work—emanating from His church. When the Father gazes upon believers, He sees them not in their sinfulness but clothed in Christ's righteousness. This fragrance, this perfection transferred to them, makes His throne among His people absolutely steadfast and unmovable.
Herein lies extraordinary comfort. Your acceptance before Elohim depends not upon your fluctuating performance or inherent worthiness, but upon Christ's sacrifice and God's unchanging love. The throne of Adonai in your life will not shift because it rests upon the immovable foundation of Christ's work, not upon the sand of human virtue. Your weakness cannot dislodge Him; only His eternal pleasure keeps you secure.
