God's Faithfulness: The Foundation We Can Trust
God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of His Son. Upon this eternal, self-existent fidelity we can repose with safety.
We speak often of human fidelity, yet much must be said of human infidelity. In friendship and love, who can say what a week, a month, or a year may bring forth? In the very strength of human affection lies its frailty. When we toss upon a shifting sea in sailing over human love, we turn to the everlasting firmness of God's fidelity. We recognise this faithlessness most keenly in ourselves—how often we are faithful only because we are ashamed to be otherwise, how we have betrayed that which was given us to keep.
Yet God's answer surprises us. We flee from man to God; God sends us back to man. If a man find not fidelity in his brother whom he hath seen, how can he find fidelity in God whom he hath not seen? When we search for faithfulness, we shall find it—in the uncomplaining patience of parents, wife, and sister; in friends who have never failed us. With this new light, we look within our own hearts and discover we have been true to many. What is this stability in human nature that accompanies instability? It is the fidelity of God Himself that moves and lives within His children. The kingdom of God is among you.
