God's Laughter at the Wicked's Final Day
When the Psalmist declares, "The Lord shall laugh at him," we may wonder why God does not immediately strike down the wicked with overwhelming force. If Adonai values our salvation so deeply, why does He withhold His hand and permit our enemies to rage? The answer lies in divine patience as a test of our own. God deliberately delays His swift judgment—He connives for a time, holding back His power—not from indifference, but from purpose. This restraint proves our faith. When we cry out for immediate vengeance and God answers only with silence and apparent amusement, our flesh murmurs and complains. We demand action. Yet the Psalmist provides the consolation Calvin illuminates: God laughs because He already sees the appointed day of destruction approaching. His laughter is not cruelty but certainty. The wicked plot their schemes under the illusion of safety, unaware that their final hour draws near. God observes their frantic efforts with the calm assurance of one who knows the ending. He does not rush to judgment because judgment is already written. Our trial, then, is to wait with the same certainty—to trust that what appears as divine indifference is actually divine foresight. The delay tests whether we will maintain faith in His justice when we cannot yet perceive it.
