God's Presence Sanctifies the Living Temple of His Church
"Surely God is in thee." — Jehovah Himself present in His Church.
I. THE DIGNITY OF THE CHURCH. Solomon marveled when Jehovah promised His presence in the newly erected temple. Yet there exists a nobler temple for God—the Church composed of living stones (lithos, stone; ekklesia, assembly). This text refers to God's presence within that community. In vouchsafing His presence, Jehovah accomplishes three acts: He honors His own truth, exalts His own Son, and imparts His own graces to the faithful.
II. THE SPIRITUALITY OF THE CHURCH'S EXPERIENCE. No phrase more accurately describes the true Christian than "Surely God is in thee." Authentic faith transcends mere intellectual opinion, external decorum of life, or ecstatic raptures of feeling alone. Rather, it constitutes nothing less than genuine union of the soul with God—a real participation in the Divine nature. This indwelling transforms the believer's entire being.
III. THE HOLINESS OF CONDUCT. The text intimates not only the Christian's dignity and spiritual experience but also the inescapable demand for holy conduct. Without this manifestation in daily living, all claims to God's presence are empty. The presence of Jehovah within demands that believers exhibit righteousness in word and deed, reflecting the holiness of God Himself.
