God's Riddle: The Supreme Intelligence's Eternal Question

"Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended?" presents Elohim's great conundrum—spoken from eternity into time, posed by the Supreme Intelligence to every human heart and reason. Human history becomes one prolonged wrestling match with God's infinite riddle.

Noble minds and able thinkers sometimes never solve it here. Lesser minds, called agnostics, lightheartedly abandon the pursuit. Yet surrender of God's riddle paralyzes the imagination—man's creative faculty—and freezes the mainsprings of human activity. Such surrender falsely claims humility while actually presuming complete knowledge.

The Talmudic legend teaches that God's finger marks the upper lip of every newborn, saying: "Child, thou knowest, but thou shalt not reveal that which thou knowest till thou hast learnt it by suffering in the infant school of human life."

"What is His name?" It is a beautiful name, capable of saving the anxious heart from losing itself in tangled speculations masquerading as religious truth. This name radiates eternal hope through life's darkest problems and encourages patient, trustful, hopeful waiting and working.

Darwin observed: "There lives and works a soul in all things; one hand has surely worked through this universe." Yet Theos—God—remains inadequate when merely philosophical. Boundless intelligence administering boundless power, in its very awfulness and vagueness, has evolved humanity's grossest caricatures of God's name. Only through revealed truth does the Eternal Power manifest His moral character.
