God's Word: The Only Sustenance for Unbearable Sorrow
Without the Word of God, men have sought escape through the bottle to drown their sorrows, through suicide when life became unbearable, through hopelessness when misfortune stripped away all strength to struggle. Some have even become atheists in practice, though they claimed faith in theory. All fall victim to sorrow's bitterest sting and calamity's cruelest effects.
Yet nothing else can fill this void. Nature reveals no comfort in suffering's mystery. Human philosophy offers only cold comfort at best, and precisely when most needed, it fails most utterly.
But God's Word proves its sufficiency through seven irrefutable witnesses: First, in the lived experience of those who have tested it. Second, through the character of its promises. Third, by unveiling a beneficent Providence working through calamity itself. Fourth, by revealing God's pity and Christ's deep sympathy. Fifth, through the "Man of sorrows" who wrought salvation through suffering and entered into glory. Sixth, by teaching us of the Incarnate Word—a suffering God who becomes solace to suffering men. Seventh, by displaying the glory of heaven and eternal felicity awaiting those who overcome through the blood of the Lamb.
When sorrow threatens to overwhelm, the Scripture sustains where all earthly remedies fail. Yahweh's Word remains the only reliable anchor in life's darkest storms.
