Going Under

Every day, approximately sixty thousand Americans lie down on an operating table and do something remarkable — they allow a anesthesiologist to render them completely unconscious. In that moment before the propofol takes hold, a patient surrenders every shred of control. They cannot watch what happens next. They cannot speak up if something goes wrong. They cannot even breathe on their own, because the anesthesiologist will manage that too.

Dr. Emery Brown, a Harvard neuroscientist who has spent his career studying what anesthesia does to the brain, describes it as a state more profound than sleep — a "reversible coma." The patient's brain waves flatten. Awareness vanishes. And yet millions of people consent to this every year. Why?
