Good Understanding Giveth Favour: The Mind as Treasury
Proverbs 13:15 declares that good understanding giveth favour. A sound intellect encompasses four essential components. First, enlightenment—the soul without knowledge cannot flourish; true understanding must be informed by the science of duty and knowledge of Elohim. Second, impartiality—a good intellect holds the balance of thought with steady hand, avoiding prejudice. Third, religiousness—it must be inspired with deep allegiance to heaven and Adonai's sovereignty. Fourth, practicalness—it carries decisions into actual life with strength and boldness.
Psalm 111:10 confirms this: "A good understanding have all they that do His commandments." Thus good understanding becomes tantamount to practical godliness.
The usefulness of such intellect cannot be overstated. The man of good understanding becomes the greatest benefactor—his thoughts are seeds of the world's best institutions, arts, and inventions. He proves invaluable in family, neighbourhood, market, senate, and pulpit. Sir Thomas Browne captured this spirit: "I make not my head a grave, but a treasury of knowledge...I study not for my own sake only, but for theirs that study not for themselves."
No favours prove more valuable than mental gifts. He who helps the mind think with accuracy and freedom, love with purity, and hope with reason, helps the entire man. Yet only those possessing good understanding can confer such favours upon souls. As Shakespeare wrote, "Ignorance is the curse of God; knowledge the wing with which we fly to heaven."
