Heaven and Earth Called as Witnesses Against Sin
When God summons His judgment, He calls upon all creation itself to testify. "He shall call to the heavens from above, and to the earth" (Psalm 50:4). These dumb creatures—mute in ordinary speech—become eloquent witnesses against an unworthy people. The very rocks cry out where human voices fall silent.
Spurgeon understood this principle from Scripture's pattern. In Deuteronomy 32:1, Moses called heaven and earth to witness the covenant. Isaiah 1:2 presents the heavens and earth as accusers: "Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth." Micah 6:2 similarly summons mountains to bear witness against Israel's faithlessness.
The Chaldee paraphrase enriches this imagery: God will call the high angels from above and the just of the earth from beneath. Creation itself—both celestial and terrestrial—becomes a court of justice. Every sunrise, every harvest, every law of nature testifies against those who reject their Maker's covenant.
For sinners, this is sobering truth. You cannot escape judgment because the universe itself stands as witness. The heavens declare God's glory; the earth proclaims His righteousness. Yet this same creation that accuses also reminds us that God's mercy calls us to repentance before His judicial throne assembles its witnesses.
