Hidden Things Revealed: Providence and the Day of Judgment
For there is nothing hid, which shall not be manifested (Mark 4:22).
Our Lord justifies His parabolic teaching method on the principle that immediate revelation is not always desirable. Many things lie concealed in nature and by Providence's design, yet not permanently. Geology furnishes striking proof: measureless beds of coal hidden for ages in the earth's bowels, ordained by Providence to be revealed when necessity demands. The precise timing of unveiling proves difficult for finite human knowledge, yet we rest assured it will coincide exactly with our need.
This principle comforts us when human efforts fail—such results may simply reflect our unconscious attempt to anticipate the fore-appointed time. The doctrine of Jesus Christ fears no light; it is the light that must enlighten the world. Everything emerges sooner or later.
The humble person conceals his virtue in this life, but Elohim will disclose it at the day of eternity. The hypocrite hides his wickedness here, but shall suffer eternal confusion before heaven and earth. Thomas Edwards, the Scottish naturalist, collecting insects during an expedition, was overtaken by tremendous storm—thunder roaring, lightning blazing, rain descending in torrents. Seeking shelter at a farmhouse, the gudewife made a blazing fire and bade him dry himself. Yet as warmth penetrated his pockets, insects long dormant suddenly revived and escaped, revealing what the storm could not: hidden things brought to light by Providence's appointed season.
