Jehovah's Name as Memorial: God's Unchanging Character
In Exodus 3:15, Jehovah declares His name a perpetual memorial to all generations. The Biblical Illustrator (1887) unpacks four essential truths from this revelation:
First, Christ is true God, equal in essence, power, and glory with the Father. The Angel who wrestled Jacob (Genesis 32:24-30) is Jehovah Sabaoth (Lord of Hosts)—the commander of all creation's armies.
Second, those who commune with Jehovah possess extraordinary advantage and dignity. Jacob's wrestling was not with an ordinary being but with the God who possesses self-existence and commands all creatures as His hosts at need.
Third, God remains unchangeably constant. He proved Himself to Jacob not merely for immediate use but as an eternal memorial—so His Church across all generations would know Him as kind, able, and merciful to those who seek Him. This is why the next verse exhorts Israel to return to Him.
