Jehovah's Presence: The Mark of God's True People
The distinguishing characteristic of God's people is not their numbers, wealth, or earthly power, but the presence of Jehovah Himself. Joseph S. Exell observed in The Biblical Illustrator (1887) that we might divide any land into three parts: open enemies, false professors, and genuine Christians. Only this third part—the truly spiritual—bears the blessing of vital godliness and experiences God's covenant presence eternally.
Jehovah's presence with His Church operates on three levels. First, relatively: He dwells with believers in binding covenant union. Second, experimentally: the Church as a body and each member individually testifies to His accompanying hand throughout history. Third, perpetually: Christ's promise echoes across ages—"I am with you always, even unto the end of the world."
This presence explains profound mysteries. Because Jehovah stands with His people, they fight victoriously, for their enemies cannot prevail against God Himself. The truth of Elohim must triumph because divine power sustains it. The prophet's vision encompassed not merely Judah, the center of God's people, but extended to Ephraim—the withered branch severed from the vine—promising that descendants of the ten tribes would return and participate in glory.
Life Divine becomes the pledge of life eternal. When Adonai is with you, your faith transforms from mere profession into living reality. God's "yea and amen" are stamped upon His people, sealing their victory, unification, and blessedness.
