Labour and Rest: God's Merciful Provision for Human Dignity
"On the seventh day thou shalt rest." The Sabbath law reveals three profound truths about human need and divine care.
First, rest is needful. Exhausted faculties require repose after labour. Without it, work becomes irksome and slovenly rather than joyous and conscientious. The human mechanism, like a locomotive driven beyond safe speed, deteriorates catastrophically without repair. Sleep, quiet nourishment, and freedom from constant stimulation restore both mind and body to soundness.
Second, rest is mercifully provided by Adonai Himself—lest employers exploit workers, lest servants, foreigners, and beasts be defrauded of their God-given right. Yahweh mandates this not as a suggestion but as divine law protecting human dignity.
Third, rest should be diligently earned. "Six days shalt thou do thy work"—not with negligence or lounging, but earnestly and conscientiously. This is the covenant balance: labour with integrity, then receive rest as its earned companion.
