Laying Up Treasures in Heaven: Matthew 6:19
Our Lord's command to lay up treasures in heaven does not discourage diligent labour for the body—industry remains part of our duty. Rather, we are cautioned against over-valuing earthly possessions. The accumulation of wealth is natural to human nature, yet for an immortal being, only eternal investment truly matters.
What constitutes heavenly treasure? When a Christian flees from the wrath to come through faith in Christ, he accumulates it. When he sets his affection on things above and anchors his conversation in eternity, he deposits treasure in Elohim's bank. Every act motivated by eternal consequence—whether through time, talent, influence, or money—becomes a heavenly investment.
Consider the power of pistis (faith) to appropriate what we grasp spiritually. By sending your affection forward to occupy heaven, you possess present enjoyment of your eternal reversion. Most poignantly, when we cultivate friendships with God's children, each departing believer becomes an actual increase of holy treasure awaiting us in another state. Death, for the Christian, merely sweeps the field to house the harvest.
Earthly treasures are evanescent—subject to theft, rust, and decay. Yet heavenly treasures endure forever. The lawful possession of earthly goods is no sin; the sin lies in making them our ultimate concern. By constantly evaluating our resources through eternity's lens, we transfer our wealth into God's safekeeping, where it multiplies beyond measure and awaits our arrival.
