Lessons from Humility - Story

In a small village, there lived a shepherd named Samuel. His days were filled with the simple yet profound rhythm of tending to his sheep. One rainy afternoon, as storm clouds rolled in, Samuel noticed one of his lambs, the smallest and weakest of the flock, struggling to keep up. Rather than scolding it for lagging behind, he knelt down, gently scooped it into his arms, and whispered words of comfort, “You are safe with me.”

As the storm raged, Samuel found himself drawn to Psalm 23, particularly the comforting promise that “He leads me beside still waters.” In that moment, he realized that true leadership is not about lording over others; it’s about humility and grace. Even the strongest shepherd must rely on the care of the Good Shepherd, who knows our challenges and walks with us through them.

The storm eventually passed, and the sun broke through the clouds, casting a golden glow across the pasture. Samuel placed the lamb back on the ground, and it stood, wobbly but determined. It had learned a lesson about trust and hope, as Samuel had modeled the quiet strength that comes from humility.

Every day, we face our own storms—doubts, fears, and trials that can weigh us down. Yet, like that little lamb, we are called to lean into the Shepherd’s embrace, trusting that He will guide us to renewal and spiritual growth. In our humility, there is strength; in our challenges, there is hope. Let us remember that even in our weakness, we are never alone.
