Lessons from Kindness - Story
Mary had always been the quiet one in our church. With her soft smile and gentle demeanor, she seemed to blend into the backdrop of our vibrant community. Yet, on a chilly December evening, she stepped into the spotlight in a way none of us could have anticipated.
As the holiday season approached, our church decided to host a community dinner for families in need. The committee was busy gathering donations, but Mary quietly reached out to several local businesses, sharing her vision of a gathering filled with warmth and joy. When the day of the dinner arrived, Mary arrived early, not just to help set up but to personally welcome every guest, her heart radiating agape, that selfless love that draws us all closer to God.
One by one, she listened to stories of hardship and hope, her laughter mingling with the aroma of turkey and spices. A single mother, weary and anxious, found herself seated next to Mary. Their conversation flowed effortlessly, and by the end of the night, the mother’s burden seemed a little lighter, her heart a little fuller.
Through her kindness, Mary reminded us of Ephesians 2:8-9, where Paul writes about grace as a gift, not something we earn. Transformation happens in the most unexpected moments, often through the simplest acts of love.
