Lessons from Technology and Human Connection
In our rapidly evolving world, technology often feels like a double-edged sword. On one side, it connects us in ways that our ancestors could only dream of—think of the video calls that let us share birthdays with loved ones across the globe, or social media platforms that allow for a quick “check-in” with a friend who’s going through a tough time. Yet, on the other side, technology can also build walls. We scroll through endless feeds, our hearts aching for connection while paradoxically feeling more isolated than ever.
This tension echoes in the story from John 13:12-17, where Jesus washes the feet of His disciples. Imagine the scene: dusty feet, an unassuming room, the air thick with the fragrance of humility. Here was the Son of God, kneeling before His friends, showing us that true connection is rooted in service and love. Jesus didn’t let the trappings of His divinity keep Him from the vulnerability of washing dirty feet; He embraced the messiness of human connection.
In our own lives, how can we follow His example? When we connect through a screen, do we choose to serve one another, to share our burdens, to offer hesed—that steadfast love and kindness—through our messages? The call to action is clear: let us take the initiative to step away from our screens and into one another's lives.
As we navigate the complexities of technology, let us remember that it is in the act of reaching out and serving that we truly embody the love of Christ. This is not merely a call to engage with technology; it is a call to transform how we use it, creating a community that reflects God’s justice and compassion in every post, every message, and every interaction. With each act of kindness, we build a bridge, turning the tide from isolation to connection, just as Jesus did.
