Liars in Jest Face Judgment in Earnest
Psalm 5:6 pronounces the Divine judgment: "Thou shalt destroy them that speak leasing"—those who traffic in falsehoods, whether spoken carelessly or with malicious intent. The distinction matters little to Yahweh's justice. A lie uttered in jest remains a lie; the speaker who treats deceit as mere entertainment reveals a heart careless toward truth itself.
John Trapp's observation cuts to the bone: "Those that lie in jest will (without repentance) go to hell in earnest." The witticism masks a solemn reality. We cannot toy with dishonesty as though it were harmless sport. The man who practices deception for amusement has cultivated a corrupt disposition. He has made himself comfortable with falsehood, allowing it to become his native tongue.
Spurgeon understood that Elohim abhors the lie because it violates His nature—He is absolute Truth. When we speak leasing, we align ourselves with the father of lies himself. The jest becomes the gateway; the earnest follows as consequence. No amount of humor or casualness mitigates the offense against the Holy One.
The warning is plain: repentance must precede judgment. Those who confess their deceptions and turn from them receive mercy. But those who persist in falsehood, treating it as a light matter, will meet the weight of Divine justice without excuse. The courtroom of Heaven keeps no jest.
