Life at the Bottom of the World

In 1977, geologist Jack Corliss and his team descended nearly 8,000 feet into the Pacific Ocean aboard the research submersible Alvin. They expected to find a barren seafloor near the Galapagos Rift. Instead, they discovered something that rewrote biology: thriving ecosystems clustered around hydrothermal vents, where superheated water reached 750 degrees, toxic hydrogen sulfide billowed like smoke, and crushing pressure ruled in absolute darkness.

No sunlight. No photosynthesis. By every known rule of biology, life should not have existed there. And yet giant tube worms, ghostly white crabs, and dense colonies of bacteria flourished in conditions scientists had written off as uninhabitable.

These organisms did not wait for the environment to become hospitable. They adapted. They drew energy not from the sun but from the chemicals pouring out of the earth itself, through a process called chemosynthesis.

There are seasons in life when everything familiar is stripped away — the light, the warmth, the conditions we thought we needed to survive. Courage does not always mean charging into battle. Sometimes courage means learning to draw life from a new source when every old source has gone dark.

The Almighty never promised us easy terrain. But He did promise His presence in every depth. As the psalmist wrote, "If I make my bed in the depths, You are there" (Psalm 139:8). The same God who sustains life at the bottom of the ocean sustains you in the deepest valley you will ever walk through.

You do not need the conditions to change. You need to know the One who made you is already there.
