Life at the Crushing Depth

In 1977, geologist Jack Corliss and a team aboard the submersible Alvin descended nearly eight thousand feet to the floor of the Pacific Ocean near the Galapagos Rift. They expected barren rock. What they found changed biology forever.

Around hydrothermal vents — fissures spewing water heated to over 700 degrees Fahrenheit — they discovered thriving ecosystems. Giant tube worms, ghostly white crabs, and dense colonies of bacteria flourished in total darkness, under pressures that would crush a human instantly. These organisms did not need sunlight. They had found another way, converting toxic chemicals into energy through a process called chemosynthesis.

Life had looked at the most hostile environment on Earth and refused to retreat.

There is a sermon on that ocean floor. Courage is not the absence of pressure — it is the refusal to let pressure have the final word. When the Psalmist wrote, "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me," he was not describing a life without crushing depths. He was describing a life that flourishes anyway.

Some of you are living at the crushing depth right now. The pressure is real. The darkness is real. But El Shaddai, the Almighty, the same God who planted life at the bottom of the ocean, has planted something in you that no pressure can extinguish.

You do not need the circumstances to change. You need to know that the One who sustains life in impossible places is sustaining you right now.
