Life Where No Light Reaches

In 1977, geologist Jack Corliss and a team of researchers aboard the deep-sea submersible Alvin descended nearly eight thousand feet into the Pacific Ocean along the Galápagos Rift. They expected a barren, lifeless seafloor — a place of crushing pressure, freezing darkness, and volcanic heat. What they discovered changed biology forever.

Around superheated vents where mineral-rich water surged from the earth's crust, they found thriving ecosystems — giant tube worms stretching six feet tall, dense clusters of mussels, ghostly white crabs — all flourishing without a single ray of sunlight. These creatures survived through chemosynthesis, drawing energy not from the sun above but from the chemistry of the earth beneath them. Scientists had believed such life was impossible. The ocean floor proved them wrong.

Hope works like that. There are seasons when every familiar source of light goes dark — the diagnosis comes back wrong, the marriage fractures, the grief settles in and refuses to leave. We look around and see nothing but pressure and darkness. Yet the God who sustains entire ecosystems at the bottom of the ocean is the same God who sustains His children in their deepest valleys. As the psalmist declared, "Even the darkness is not dark to You" (Psalm 139:12).

El Shaddai, the Almighty, does not require our circumstances to improve before He begins His work. He has always been the God who creates life where no light reaches.
