Light Carriers in the Deep
In 2017, researchers Séverine Martini and Steve Haddock at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute published a remarkable finding: in the deepest zones of the ocean, where sunlight never reaches, roughly seventy-six percent of all creatures produce their own light. Not a rare few. The overwhelming majority. In the most lightless environment on earth, life itself has learned to glow.
These organisms carry the chemistry of illumination inside their own bodies. A jellyfish pulsing blue-green in water a mile deep has never seen the sun, yet it shines. No external source required. The light is generated from within.
Hope works the same way in the life of a believer. There are seasons when every external reason for optimism disappears — the diagnosis, the divorce papers, the phone call no parent should ever receive. The darkness feels absolute, and no light seems to reach that deep.
But the Holy One has placed something within His people that the darkness cannot extinguish. The apostle Paul called it "Christ in you, the hope of glory." It is not a hope that depends on circumstances improving. It is a light generated from within, carried in the very DNA of faith.
You may be in the deepest water of your life right now. But you are not without light. The God who taught deep-sea creatures to shine in pitch blackness has made you a light carrier too. The dark does not get the final word.
