Light Hidden in the Darkness

In 1995, astronomer Robert Williams made a decision that many of his colleagues thought was foolish. He pointed the Hubble Space Telescope at a tiny patch of sky near the Big Dipper — a region that appeared completely empty to every ground-based telescope on earth. Then he kept the shutter open for ten consecutive days, collecting ancient light that had been traveling for billions of years.

When the image resolved, the scientific community went silent with awe. That seemingly empty darkness contained over three thousand galaxies. Not stars — entire galaxies, each holding hundreds of billions of stars. What looked like nothing turned out to be everything.

This is how the God of All Creation so often works. He points directly at the places we have written off as empty — the marriage that feels hollow, the diagnosis that steals our breath, the season of grief where we see nothing but black sky. And He says, "Keep looking. The light is already on its way."

The psalmist understood this when he wrote, "Even the darkness is not dark to You; the night is as bright as the day" (Psalm 139:12). Our emptiness is never empty to the Almighty. What we experience as absence, He knows to be abundance we cannot yet perceive.

The next time hope feels impossibly distant, remember Hubble's deep field. The light is not missing. It is traveling toward you even now.
