As we reflect on James 1:27, which calls us to “look after orphans and widows in their distress,” let us expand this understanding of care to include the Earth itself—a creation that, like the vulnerable among us, cries out for our attention and compassion. Picture a child clutching an old, frayed teddy bear, a symbol of comfort amid uncertainty. Our planet, too, is a child in need. Each time we make a choice—whether to recycle a bottle or to opt for public transport instead of driving—think of that child. What if your small act could bring a glimmer of hope to the many “orphans” of creation suffering from our neglect?

This week, I invite you to engage your heart and hands in this mission. Visit a local community garden or join a clean-up effort at a nearby park. Bring your family or friends along and share the joy of nurturing God’s garden. In doing so, you embody the hesed (loving-kindness) that God shows us, demonstrating that our faith translates into action.

Set aside time each day for prayer, inviting God to open your eyes to the needs around you. Ask Him to reveal what stewardship looks like in your life. Maybe it’s supporting an organization like the local chapter of the Sierra Club, whose efforts to preserve our natural resources echo the call to care for the “widows” of creation.

Finally, transform your conversations. Engage your friends and loved ones in discussions about faith and stewardship, weaving in how our choices today shape the world for future generations. Remember, every small, faithful step we take in caring for creation sends ripples of grace that extend beyond what we can even imagine, illuminating the path toward restoration and hope.
