Love as God's Essence: The Weighing of All Gifts
Paul addresses the Corinthians with the authority of one versed in high learning: a man who possessed prophecy, performed miracles, and commanded great faith, speaking to the most learned nation of his age. Yet he strikes a decisive balance between head and heart. All spiritual gifts—prophecy, miracle-working, even mountain-moving faith—weigh as feathers against love.
Why does love rank thus high? Because God's essence is love (agapē). Elohim possesses infinite knowledge, wisdom, and power, yet Scripture never identifies these as His nature; they remain His attributes. Love alone mirrors the image of Elohim.
The greatest deed ever accomplished—redemption through the Cross—flowed from love. The Holy Ghost's first fruit is love. Thus we possess a Trinity of love: Father, Son, and Spirit.
Mere intellectual belief accomplishes nothing. "The devils believe and tremble," yet remain damned. Salvation arrives only when truth becomes personal—when the believer grasps, "This is all for me." In that moment of recognition, love awakens, and the soul is saved.
What sustains good actions? Only love endures. Many forces provide initial impulse, but continuance belongs to love alone. Love fulfills the entire law.
The Judgment Day itself pivots on love: "Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these." Heaven itself is perfect love perfected. Self-examination must ask: Do I love? This constitutes the true spirit of all spiritual discipline.
