Love's Four-Fold Armor Against All Opposition
The apostle Paul sets forth love's conquests in 1 Corinthians 13:7 with precise symmetry: stego (beareth), pisteuo (believeth), elpizo (hopeth), hupomeno (endureth)—four virtues against four opposing forces.
Love's difficulties assault from every quarter. Within yourself, the old nature wars against the new life Elohim has implanted. In others, even saints test your patience; the ungodly oppose your love entirely. The world itself, lying under the wicked one's dominion, marshals all forces against love's advance. And in the heavenly places, the prince of the power of the air and his fallen spirits mount relentless assault.
Yet love conquers all four sides by four corresponding virtues. When afflictions strike—love beareth them through patience. When fellow Christians wound you—love believeth all things good about them, trusting Christ's sufficiency. When the wicked rise against you—love hopeth, expecting their redemption. When spiritual forces tempt and whisper lies—love endureth, persevering by Yahweh's grace.
This conquest spans all seasons of life. In conversion's beginning, love bears the enemy's assault. Gathering strength, love believes and confesses faith boldly. Advancing further despite disappointment, love hopes all things. In infirmity and age, when action ceases, love still endures without complaint—accepting even death peacefully. The Christian warrior need never retreat, for love—rooted in Adonai himself—cannot be overcome.
