Love's Perpetual Activity and Spiritual Nourishment
Psalm 119:48 declares, 'My hands also will I lift up unto thy commandments which I have loved.' Here the psalmist reveals two essential movements of a devoted heart.
First, Love renewing its activity. The hands lifted up signify continuous action—not a single gesture of devotion, but habitual, recurring engagement with God's Word. A believer's affection for the commandments of Yahweh does not languish into passive sentiment; it propels him toward perpetual service. The hands lifted heavenward become instruments of worship and obedience, moved by love that refuses to grow dormant. This is love in motion, love that works, love that serves without weariness.
Second, Love refreshing itself with spiritual food. The commandments themselves become sustenance. When the believer meditates upon and practices God's laws, his affection deepens rather than diminishes. Each encounter with divine truth nourishes the soul, renewing strength for further obedience. The psalmist does not merely observe the commandments; he loves them, and this love feeds upon their inherent goodness and wisdom.
When a pastor's heart grows cold toward his sacred calling, when a Christian's hands fall idle in service, the remedy lies here: return to love's dual action. Lift your hands in renewed activity, and let the commandments themselves become your bread, refreshing your devotion with every meditation. Love and obedience are inseparable companions in the spiritual life.
