Lutheran Lens Perspective: Sermon Illustration
In a small town, there lived an elderly woman named Ruth. Despite her frail hands and silver hair, her spirit was indefatigable. Each Sunday, she would arrive at church with a radiant smile, her weathered Bible clutched tightly. She had a remarkable way of connecting with others, especially the younger generations. It was not uncommon to see her with a group of children, gathering them around to share stories of faith and resilience.
One day, Ruth noticed that young Emily, a girl who often sat alone, looked troubled. After the service, Ruth approached her with a gentle smile. “You know, dear,” she began, “I’ve often found comfort in Psalm 23:1-6. The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want.” She explained how, like a shepherd guiding sheep, God gently leads us through life’s valleys and meadows, offering us assurance and peace.
Ruth invited Emily to join her for lunch that week, and their bond blossomed as they shared meals and stories of God’s presence in their lives. Emily learned to see her struggles through Ruth’s eyes — a perspective bathed in hope and grace. Over time, she found purpose in serving others and sharing her own story.
Just as Ruth provided a shepherding presence in Emily’s life, we are called to embody that same love and support within our communities. In doing so, we not only grow in faith ourselves but also become instruments of God’s peace, guiding others toward His unfailing love.
