Making Light of Christ: The Peril of Gospel Indifference
In Matthew 20:5, the invited guests "made light of it"—dismissing the King's invitation to the marriage supper with contempt. What does it mean to make light of Christ's gospel?
First, consider what sinners despise. They mock the messenger bearing news of salvation. They scorn the feast itself—Yahweh's prepared abundance. They make light of the King's Son and, through Him, the King Himself. Most gravely, they trifle with the solemnities of eternity.
How do men accomplish this irreverence? They hear the gospel yet do not truly attend to it. They profess religion while neglecting to live it. Some attend to worldly concerns simultaneously with the gospel call, dividing their hearts.
Why does such indifference arise? Spurgeon identifies seven roots: ignorance of God's character, pride that exalts self above Elohim, disbelief in the messenger, worldly-mindedness that crowds out heaven's claims, thoughtlessness regarding consequences, sheer presumption before the Almighty, and familiarity breeding contempt with the gospel's commonness.
The tragedy deepens when we observe that angels, saints, and even the devil himself recognize the weightiness of eternal matters—yet professing believers dismiss them. Consider your thoughts, words, and actions. Do they evidence serious regard for Christ's invitation, or casual rejection? The soul, Jesus Christ Himself, and eternity hang in the balance. No trifling remains permissible.
