Man Created Upright, Yet Seeking Endless Inventions
God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.—Ecclesiastes 7:29
Man was fashioned in perfect conformity to the Divine law, Elohim's only immutable and eternal rule. This original uprightness required five distinct faculties working in harmony: an understanding perfectly acquainted with God's law; a memory retaining all its precepts faithfully; a conscience applying it without compromise; a heart loving that law completely; and a will obedient and submissive to Divine authority. The imagination, too, left the forming hand of the Maker entirely free from moral imperfection, presenting only holy images of spiritual and heavenly objects rather than the vain thoughts and sinful fancies that now plague it.
Yet humanity has abandoned this sacred estate. Men have sought out innumerable inventions, forsaking the good old way wherein God originally placed them. They have invented false gods and created idols, bestowing homage due to Yahweh alone upon lifeless things. Having ceased conformity to Divine law, they adopted rules more agreeable to their sinful inclinations—the laws of their country, opinions of human teachers, or the maxims of society.
Thus mankind measures itself by itself, comparing itself among themselves, having exchanged the perfect rectitude of Eden for the crooked paths of human invention. The tragedy lies not in creation's design, but in humanity's persistent rebellion against it.
