Meditation as the Soul's Rootedness in Yahweh
Those who live in continual meditation upon the ways of the Lord shall be richly rooted, like trees planted by rivers of water with vast resources. If we are rooted elsewhere, our life will be stunted and unhealthy.
In the Christian life, the spring leaf shall ever remain. The spring greenness shall not wither as the years roll by. The beauties of early life, of childhood, shall never be destroyed. His childlikeness—the glory of spring-time—shall always be fresh and beautiful, never withering away. Life shall grow and increase in knowledge, broaden in experience, open out large capacities and powers. Yet amid all developments, the beauties of childlikeness shall remain.
Grace breeds delight in Elohim, and delight breeds meditation. Meditation is the watering of the seed, making the fruits of grace to flourish. Meditation is the soul's retiring from the world—for the world spoils meditation. It is serious and solemn thinking upon God with intentness to recollect and gather together the thoughts. A carnal, flitting Christian is like a traveller whose thoughts ride post, minding nothing of God. A wise Christian is like an artist who views with seriousness and ponders the things of religion.
Meditation is the raising of the heart to holy affections—a duty imposed by Adonai himself, who bids us both believe and meditate. The meditation of a truth hath more sweetness than bare remembrance. A sermon remembered but not ruminated will only serve to increase our condemnation another day.
