Midnight Thanksgiving for Righteous Judgments
The psalmist declares, 'At midnight I will rise to give thanks unto thee because of thy righteous judgments.' Observe three pillars of worship here.
First, the duty of gratitude—'give thanks.' This is no optional sentiment but a binding obligation upon the believer. Thanksgiving is not merely agreeable; it is commanded. The Christian who neglects gratitude commits a form of rebellion against Adonai's goodness.
Second, the subject of gratitude—'thy righteous judgments.' Not the psalmist's comfort, not his prosperity, but Yahweh's judgments themselves. These divine verdicts—though they may cut like a surgeon's knife—are perfectly righteous. The believer learns to praise the Lord not merely when His judgments please him, but because they are just and true. This transforms suffering into worship.
Third, the season of gratitude—'at midnight.' Not only in daylight when joy flows easily, but in darkness when sorrow presses down. The midnight hour represents our deepest trials. Yet even then, the faithful rise to give thanks. This is no superficial piety. When a man abandons his bed at midnight to worship, he demonstrates that his gratitude springs from genuine conviction, not circumstance.
