Moonlight: Who Do You Say That I Am? (Matthew 16:15)
Chiron carries his true self buried so deep even he can barely find it. In a world that demands he be hard, he builds walls of muscle and silence. Only Juan, a drug dealer who becomes a father figure, sees the frightened boy inside. Juan takes young Chiron to the ocean and holds him afloat. "At some point, you gotta decide for yourself who you gonna be," Juan tells him. "Can't let nobody make that decision for you." Jesus asks the same question: "Who do you say that I am?" Our answer to that question determines who we become. Chiron spends the film learning who he is—and discovering that being known, truly known, is both terrifying and liberating.
